Age: 16
History: free! wiki + season 1 involvement

Personality: Gou is not half as charismatic as her brother is; she's not the type to be a leader, nor does she inspire in the same way he does. However, she's an extremely easygoing girl with a personality that draws people towards her because, despite at times demanding, she works alongside everyone's strengths. In a way, she manages to be a complement to the personality of others around her. This is not to say that she falls to the background and disappears entirely to give way to others--in fact, her presence in a place is always noticeable. She's outspoken, and makes sure her opinion and ideas are known. She's got a bit of a thoughts-talking filter, but it's not always tuned in (case in point: her open fangirling over muscles in front of the very guys she's fangirling over).

What's important to realise is that Gou is, first and foremost, someone's little sister. Though she's only a year younger than her brother, they're not exactly close; years of him living abroad and shutting himself away from his family made it hard to find that connection when they both grew into teenagers. Another important factor to realise is that Gou is the daughter of a single mother. It seems to be forgotten throughout the series that it's also Gou's father who died, leaving her family as a unit of three. This is likely to have caused her to cherish those she has left more, no matter what they put her through. Even with her brother acting out, she's not angry nor vindictive; her take on it was to be worried for him. She tries to create that connection, checking up on him and making sure he's alright, but realising that, ultimately, she's not what her brother needs to be happy again.

Maybe the reason why the series doesn't focus much on Gou's attachment to her father is because she's let go of the past and made her peace with it, unlike Rin, who still holds on to this romantic vision of their father and his Olympic dreams of gold. I think this really shows how she's a strong girl, despite her physique, and she deserves credit where it's due for it.

She's sure of herself, confident when she first strikes conversation with others. Though appearing a little shy during the first couple of minutes, she easily asserts herself and comes off as someone who knows what she's about. She is strict in her business and dedicated, especially when she has her own goals to reach; fixing and setting up the swim club had its purpose of getting to her brother, so she worked hard on her responsibilities to make it happen and make sure her Iwatobi swimmers had everything they needed to open up the club and be real contenders in competitions. She can be a little moody, as it were, calling out her 'senpais' for slacking off or not being too serious about things, and though she appears angry in those situations, it's just the way she portrays herself in those instances but in no way is she actually angry.

Gou also has the kind of attitude where if something is overdone, or overrated, she is immediately put off by it--even if just momentarily! Too many muscles within a span of fifteen minutes has her enthusiasm and shoujo bubbles around her dissipating because of redundancy, and overbearing, enthusiastic swim captains have her grow tired of the incessant attention (since she's got other goals in mind). She doesn't seem particularly interested in guys, no matter how attractive they (or their muscles) are, enough to date them at this point in her life, either.

All in all, Gou is a sweet girl. She is kind, open, and understands others. She may not do all the talking all the time, but that's because she's a good listener. She solves problems, or helps with the formula to get to the solution. Her enthusiasm and moods will fluctuate as will with any other kid her age, but that's just normal. Deep inside she only ever really wants the happiness of her friends--and especially that of her brother. Most of what she's done, she's done it for someone else's sake; because to see those she loves in a good place, and happy, is what makes her happy, too.

Debt: Gou's initial involvement in the plot of Free! is to meet her brother's friends from his elementary swim club days. Rin is back from Australia, keeping himself shut in his boarding school, and away from home; she knows that something's changed (for the worse) and she wants to do something to help, even if she's not sure as to what. Talking to the boys from Iwatobi isn't enough, so she takes action and joins the swim club as their manager to help them get to swim alongside her brother again, one way or the other. It's a challenging task, and it's doubtful she has any idea how it's going to work out, since they're in different teams and all. However, she works hard with what she can and can do nothing more but to trust that her brother and his friends can find a way to fix whatever was keeping them apart. In episode 12, Rin swims alongside Haruka, Makoto, and Nagisa again--as a team. Rin's entire attitude changes, and he is back to being closer to his older self, without burdens and the heavy baggage he brought with him from Australia. Her debt is what she owes the Iwatobi boys for their sacrifice to make her brother know that he was worth more than what he valued himself as, and that he was--despite everything--still part of the team, their team. Without them, she's not sure she would have back the brother she loved and remembered so fondly.

Suitability: If there's something the Matsuoka siblings have in common, it's their inability to back down from any challenge, even when the going gets rough. Though not as athletic and competitive as her brother, Gou knows the meaning of hard work, loyalty, and keeping her word. Of course she will not be happy to be stuck into a life of servitude, but she will consider that if this is what she owes for the debt which basically brought new life into her brother, she's not going to complain about it. She'll get the job done, with some grumbling along the way, but be completely assured that what she's gotten in return is worth her troubles.

Inventory: Nothing too important! Her clothes (something like this) and her fishie hair tie.

Abilities, Strengths, and Weaknesses: Gou sucks at sports. She doesn't practice sports like her brother, nor has the stamina for any of it (she's running out of breath from a small run on episode 1 plz). However, though the show doesn't focus too much on her, it's likely that she makes up for her lack of condition with being pretty smart. She's plenty organised, knows how to get her point across, and gets stubborn to the point where she makes things happen. She's also really good in Japanese Calligraphy, but sometimes she gets way into her work to the point where she invests tons of time and effort into it (and we know that can go both ways on the good and bad depending on results).
